Ubud Naturalist
& Bird Walk
Leave Luang Prabang’s centre for a private lunch at
the Mekong-side home of Francis Engelmann,
French writer and long-time UNESCO consultant
who helped secure the city’s World Heritage status.
In his restored pavilion and tropical garden he shares
stories of royal courts, quiet monasteries and
everyday life. Browse his collections, then enjoy a
simple seasonal Lao lunch before cruising back to
town by private boat.
Accompanied by a local naturalist, guests follow quiet
village trails through Ubud’s highland countryside,
where rice terraces and coconut groves frame the
gentle walk. The route shifts with the season, with
chances to observe kingfishers, herons and other
tropical birdlife, alongside butterflies, insects and
medicinal plants. As they wander, the guide weaves in
insight on Balinese cosmology and village life,
revealing how nature, ritual and agriculture remain
closely intertwined.
